Are you looking for Winter Tyres for your vehicle?

The typical UK temperature between November through to March is less than 7 degrees centigrade; winter tyres are uniquely designed to perform more efficiently in these winter conditions. Are you also aware that drivers are up to an incredible six times more likely to be involved in a road traffic accident during these months as slippery wet roads can practically double your vehicle’s braking distance and if driving on icy road surfaces this can astoundingly multiply your usual stopping distance? Winter tyres offer optimum traction and grip in colder conditions and they also significantly improve braking distances by around 10% in the wet and 20% in the snow, so they are well worth the investment.

Many cars here in the UK are fitted with summer or all-season tyres, but winter tyres are designed to remain softer when the temperature falls and allow better traction when driving in snowy or icy conditions. Here at Bourne Car & Van Hire, we recommend you change to winter tyres once the temperature falls to below 7oc as they offer excellent grip in the cold and damp allowing more significant traction in the wet. The secret to their enhanced grip in the wet and on icy surfaces are the Sipes as they enable more excellent movement of the rubber as the soft compound grips to the road. A summer tyre would stay solid and therefore struggle to maintain a good grip. They are also uniquely designed to gather snow in the tread grooves to help disperse water and reduce the risk of aquaplaning which is where the tyre struggles to disperse the excess water which can lead to a complete loss of control.

The main differences between a winter and a summer tyre are:

  • The compound is made of softer rubber which includes more natural rubber.
  • The top of the tread blocks is marked with little slits better known as Sipes.
  • Winter tyres tend to have far deeper grooves in the tread than that of a summer tyre.

There are great benefits of having winter tyres such as:

  • They reduce stopping distances on wet and icy road surfaces.
  • They provide enhanced grip.
  • They also improve the overall handling as well as braking.
